Hello, my name is Jesse Carpenter and I own an exterior cleaning company in the Cincinnati area. My business just may be able to save you and your family. I myself am a father of four. I have two girls ages seven and eight and twin boys that are six months old.
The older I get the more I value the time I have off to spend with my family and pursue the things in life that I truly value. However, our busy American lives don't always cooperate with us. Not too long ago when I was a young father living paycheck to paycheck I was almost solely focused on making sure that there was enough money in the account and making sure that we didn't get into too much debt! It was hard on my family for me to spend so much time at work (an average of 60 hours a week) and so little time at home. It was not good for my mental, emotional, and physical health. Sometimes we have hard choices to make when it comes to making sure our family is provided for.
According to the ILO (International Labor Organization), “Americans work 137 more hours per year than Japanese workers, 260 more hours per year than British workers, and 499 more hours per year than French workers.”¹ In other words "If you work in the United States your leisure time is being squeezed!" If you are like most people you have very control over how many hours you put in at your job. Projects need completed, cases need closed, orders need to be filled, products need to be shipped etc... And your boss is probably not going to consider your need to spend time with family, enjoy your hobbies, connect with friends, or generally live a more balanced life.
I believe the key here is to delegate the responsibilities that have to be done, and to get rid of the responsibilities that don't align with what you value. These are decisions that I make every day in my business. What to delegate, what to focus on and what not to. This should apply to our downtime as well. Don’t let your life be dictated by all the obligations of life. Learn to make decisions that focus on what you and your family value.
